ASTM D 6905-2020 Impact Toughness of Organic Coatings

Meaning and Purpose
5.1 The coating attached to the substrate will be subject to destructive impact during the manufacturing and use of the product. It has been found that this impact-resistant practice helps predict the performance of organic coatings due to their ability to resist impact-induced cracking.

Scope of
1.1 The practice covers procedures for determining the ability of the coating and its substrate to resist breakage, cracking or chipping when the film and substrate expand to their original form as a result of impact.

1.2 This practice does not measure impact resistance, but uses rapid impact to improve the test method D522, which is a flexible test method. Since the effect of the coating is almost instantaneous, all problems related to the time variable in the mand-axis test are eliminated.

1.3 This practice is similar in content but not technically equivalent to test method D2794.

1.4 Values expressed in SI units should be considered standard. The values given in parentheses are for reference only.

1.5 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.6 This international Standard has been developed in accordance with the internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade of the World Trade Organization.
