ASTM D2809-2017 “Engine Coolant Determination of Aluminum Pump Cavity Corrosion and Erosion Corrosion”

Meaning and use
4.1 This test method can be used to distinguish between coolants that cause cavitation and erosive corrosion of aluminum automotive pumps and those that do not. Specific rating numbers determined based on this test are not intended to correspond to specific mileage in vehicle testing; However, limited correlation was observed between bench and field service tests using single-phase coolant. If the actual impact of coolant on cavitation and erosive corrosion is to be assessed, field testing under harsh operating conditions should be used as the final test. With proper control of the test variables, it is also possible to determine the influence of pump design, structural materials, and pump operating conditions on cavitation and erosion corrosion damage.

ASTM D2809-2017 “Engine Coolant Determination of Aluminum Pump Cavity Corrosion and Erosion Corrosion”

Radius
1.1 This test method covers the evaluation of cavitation and erosion corrosion characteristics of aluminum automotive pumps with coolant.

Note 1: During the development of this test method, it was found that the results obtained when testing two-phase coolants were not correlated with the results of field tests. Therefore, this test method cannot be recommended as an important test for determining cavitation effects of two-phase coolants.
