ASTM D8008-2015 Standard Practice for Representative Field Sampling of Transportation Coatings

The ASTM D8008 Standard Practice for Representative Field Sampling of Transportation Coatings includes procedures for obtaining representative field samples of mixed or unmixed water-based, solvent-based, or other liquid transportation coatings from drums, carrying cases, or machine strip cans.
Meaning and use

5.1 For the quality assessment and/or approval of traffic coatings stored on site, it is usually necessary to obtain representative samples for testing. Proper sampling of traffic coatings is a skilled operation, and if not done correctly with the appropriate equipment and procedures, the sample may inadvertently fail one or more specification tests when evaluated by the test laboratory. Test results that may be affected include solids content, resin content, TiO 2 content, thermal aging stability, freeze-thaw stability, and drying time. Any of these may inadvertently result in a non-approval or penalty.

Step 1: Scope

1.1 The practice includes procedures for obtaining representative field samples of mixed or unmixed water-based, solvent-based, or other liquid transportation coatings from drums, carrying cases, or machine strip cans. Transportation paint samples are typically taken from storage containers on site by paint suppliers or government agencies for laboratory testing to determine product quality and/or approval prior to stripping. It is important that the samples taken are “representative” (having a composition that reflects the overall composition of the container). Although traffic coatings can remain uniform for weeks or months, some coatings can layer and become uneven over time. Obtaining representative samples can be challenging, especially in a field setting. The required method for obtaining a liquid sample is to mix the sample well until uniform and then sample the mixture from the top. If complete mixing cannot be verified, an alternative is to obtain the sample using a liquid tube sampling device. These devices are capable of capturing the paint core from top to bottom from the container. An internal or external rod-tube sampler is recommended for sample extraction. The internal rod tube sampler is the preferred sampler.

1.2 The practice of selecting representative samples shall be agreed in writing between the parties supplying the product and the parties testing the product.

1.3 Values in inch-pounds shall be considered as standard values. The values given in parentheses are mathematical transformations of SI units and are for reference only and are not considered standard.

1.4 This standard is not intended to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
