Epoxy resins are a class of synthetic resins that include products ranging from viscous liquids to high melting point solids. Resin molecules contain one or more ethylene oxide or epoxy groups as reaction sites, usually in the form of glycidyl. The commercially important resin is the glycidyl ether of bisphenol A, made from the condensation of epichlorohydrin and diphenylpropane (bisphenol A). Epoxy resins with different properties can also be commercially produced by reacting epichlorohydrin with other materials. In order to be used, the resin needs to be cross-linked with a hardener or hardener. The choice of curing agent is very important in designing an epoxy resin system for a given application. The main reactive groups in the resin, the epoxy and hydroxyl groups, react with many other groups, so a variety of chemicals can be used as curing agents. These include anhydrides, aliphatic and aromatic amines, and polyamides. Some curing agents cross-link the resin at ambient temperatures, while others require heat.
