ISO 6744-1-1999 Adhesive alkyd resins for paints and varnishes – Part 1: General test methods

introduction
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

International standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in Part 3 of the ISO/IEC Directive.

The draft international standard adopted by the Technical Committee will be circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an international standard requires approval by at least 75% of member institutions.

You are advised that some elements of this part of ISO 6744 May be the subject of a patent right. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patents.

The international standard ISO 6744-1 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and Varnishes, Subcommittee SC 10, Test Methods for adhesives for Paints and varnishes.

Together with other parts (see below), this part of ISO 6744 cancels and replaces the technically revised ISO 6744:1984.

ISO 6744 consists of the following parts, under the general heading Paints and varnishes binders – alkyd resins:

– Part 1: General test methods

– Part 2: Determination of phthalic anhydride content

– Part 3: Determination of unsaponifiable matter content

– Part 4: Determination of fatty acid content

1 Range
This part of ISO 6744 describes a general test method for alkyd resins used in paints, varnishes and similar products. It is also suitable for solutions and similar preparations made from alkyd resins that are intended to be used as adhesives for paints and varnishes.

The test method for individual alkyd resins shall be agreed upon by the parties concerned.

2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions that, by reference herein, constitute the provisions of this part of ISO 6744. For dated references, any subsequent revisions or amendments to these publications will not apply. However, Parties to an agreement based on this part of ISO 6744 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying new versions of the following normative documents. For undated references, a new version of the standard-setting document referred to applies. ISO and IEC members maintain a register of currently valid international standards.

3 Terms and definitions
For this part of ISO 6744, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1 alkyd resin

A synthetic resin produced by polycondensation of polyacids and fatty acids (or oils) with polyols

3.2 Modified alkyd resin

ISO 6744-1-1999 Adhesive alkyd resins for paints and varnishes – Part 1: General test methods

Alkyd resin, modified to obtain specific properties, such as with rosin acid, phenolic resin, vinyltoluene, styrene, isocyanate, polyamide or acrylic, epoxy resin or silicone compounds

Note 1: Alkyd resins based on tall oil fatty acids containing no more than 4% abietic acid are considered “alkyd resins” and not “modified alkyd resins”.
