ISO 8130-13-2019 Coating powders – Part 13: Particle size analysis by laser diffraction

introduction
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document and those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. In particular, attention should be paid to the different approval criteria required for different types of ISO documents. This document has been drafted in accordance with the editing rules of ISO/IEC Directive Part 2 (see iso.org/directives).

Please note that certain elements of this document may be subject to patent rights. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patents. Details of any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be found in the introduction and/or ISO list of patent claims received (see iso.org/patents).

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and Varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, Common Test Methods for paints and varnishes.

The second edition cancels and replaces the technically revised first edition (ISO 8130-13:2001).

The main changes from the previous edition are as follows:

– Added clauses on precautions, accuracy, reference materials and sources of error;

– More detailed requirements for analyzers (5.1) and expanded descriptions of tests (8.3);

– The test report has been revised to be more detailed;

— The text has been edited and revised, and normative references have been updated.

A list of all the components in the ISO 8130 series can be found on the ISO website.

Any feedback or questions regarding this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A complete list of these institutions can be found at iso.org/members.html.

ISO 8130-13-2019 Coating powders – Part 13: Particle size analysis by laser diffraction

1 Range
This document specifies a method for determining the particle size distribution of coated powder equivalent spheres by laser diffraction for particles ranging in size from 1 μm to 300 μm.

Pay attention to particle size > 300 μm may require the use of different optical models.

This document focuses specifically on the measurement of coating powders and draws attention to ISO 13320, which provides guidance for instrument identification and particle size distribution.

Laser diffraction is not suitable for the determination of very large materials and can be verified by screening analysis as described in ISO 8130-1 or dynamic image analysis as described in ISO 13322-2.
