Method for determining the gloss of paint film (ISO 2813)

1. Introduction

The ISO 2813 standard specifies methods for determining the specular gloss of coatings at different geometric angles (20°, 60° and 85°). The application of this standard can accurately measure the gloss of the paint film in the field of painting, and provide a basis for the quality control of painting.

2.1 Angle selection

The ISO 2813:1994 standard specifies the use of geometric angles of 20°, 60° and 85° for the determination of film gloss. Different angles are suitable for different types of coatings. Among them, the 60° Angle is suitable for all color paint film, but for high gloss paint film, you can choose 20° Angle measurement, and for low gloss paint film, you can use 85° Angle measurement.

2.2 Measurement principle

The principle of measurement is the same as the method of measurement of gloss introduced before, using the photoelectric principle to measure the mirror reflected light on the surface of the paint film. By measuring the reflected light intensity of the paint film in a certain Angle range, the gloss tester can obtain the gloss value of the paint film.

2.3 Operation Points

Preparation of the test plate: Apply the color paint on the clean glass plate using a wet film preparation device with a specification of 150μm to ensure that the paint film is smooth.

Gloss determination: Three readings are measured at different positions of the test film parallel to the coating direction, using a high-gloss working standard plate to calibrate the instrument to ensure accuracy. If the error is less than 5 units, record the average value as the gloss value. Otherwise, three more measurements are performed to record the average and limit values of all six values.

Measurement of the gloss of the paint film on the non-glass substrate: After adjusting the instrument and calibrating, the instrument is measured three times at two right angles on the template surface, and the average value and limit value are recorded.

Test the gloss of the surface of the painted test board: after adjusting and calibrating the instrument, test six times in different parts or directions on the painted surface, record its average value and limit value. If the error of the six test results is greater than 10 unit values or greater than 20% of the average value, the test board is discarded.

3. Meaning and application

The ISO 2813 standard provides a standardized method for determining the gloss of paint films, which can help the coating industry accurately assess the gloss of coatings. This is of great significance for film quality control and to meet the design requirements. This method is suitable for a variety of film types and helps to ensure that the coating product meets the requirements of consistency and high quality in appearance.

4. Conclusion

The ISO 2813 method for determining the gloss of paint films provides a reliable means for the painting industry to evaluate the appearance properties of paint films. By measuring the gloss value at different angles, the gloss of the paint film can be more accurately understood, so as to provide a reliable quality control means for the painting project. The application of this standard helps to improve the quality and appearance of products to meet the needs and expectations of customers.
