ISO (Organização Internacional para Padronização) é uma federação global de organismos nacionais de normalização (Órgãos membros da ISO). O desenvolvimento de padrões internacionais é geralmente realizado através de comitês técnicos ISO. Cada grupo membro interessado em um assunto para o qual foi criado um comitê técnico tem o direito de ser representado no Comitê. Organizações internacionais, governos e organizações não governamentais em contato com a ISO também estão envolvidos neste trabalho. A ISO trabalha em estreita colaboração com a Comissão Eletrotécnica Internacional (CEI) em todos os assuntos de padronização elétrica.
As normas internacionais são elaboradas de acordo com as regras fornecidas na Parte 2 da Diretiva ISO/IEC.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 23559:2007) with a minor revision of the first edition (ISO 23559:2007) by introducing an additional specimen (for low strain) for the tensile impact test specified in Table 2.

The purpose of this international standard is to provide manufacturers and users with guidance for testing plastic film.
Although existing standards provide this guidance for many thin film products, these standards are very specific in terms of the materials covered and do not address many commercial films produced as mixtures or multilayer structures. Em alguns casos, existing standards are limited to a single process technology for producing thin films.
It is also recognized that due to the numerous commercial processes used to produce thin films and the different processing parameters required for different materials, mixtures and/or structures, the general standardized concept of thin film sample preparation is not currently realistic. Por outro lado, it is possible to standardize sample preparation for clearly defined materials and manufacturing processes, but this is not within the scope or intent of this document.

This international standard identifies specific test procedures to help manufacturers and users select and characterize single – or multilayer thermoplastic films. It is intended to provide a guide for films that do not have existing standards or specifications.
Note Due to the range of materials used and the variety of processes that can be used to produce various thin film structures, sample preparation is not covered in this document.
If an international standard exists for a particular film product, the requirements of that standard shall take precedence over this document.
There are many national, regional, and industry standards that address application-specific requirements. As this international standard is intended to provide general guidance, it is not within the scope of addressing these issues.
The importance and suitability of the data should be determined by the user.

3.1 Thin Film
Films of nominal thickness not greater than 0.25 milímetros
Article Note 1: Although not specifically defined in ISO 472, o 0.25 mm limit is noted. ASTM D883 specifically defines thin films as ≤0.25 mm.
Observação 2: Sheets with a nominal thickness greater than 0.25 mm may be too hard to use test methods more suitable for thinner structures.
