This test method is used to determine the degree of curing of baking film by the resistance of the film to a specified solvent.

Solvent friction tests are usually performed using methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as a solvent. MEK resistance or degree of cure is suitable for paint topcoats and primers.

ASTM D4752 involves rubbing the surface of the baking film with cheesecloth impregnated with MEK until the film fails or breaks. Specifies the type of cheeseclob, stroke distance, stroke rate, and approximate applied pressure of friction. The friction meter is double friction (one forward friction, one backward friction constitutes double friction).

This test is widely used in the coatings industry as it provides a quick relative estimate of the degree of curing without waiting for long-term exposure results. It was reported that testing of two-component zinc-rich primers showed a good correlation between primer curing as determined by diffuse infrared spectroscopy and primer curing.
