5.1 The quality standard for artist’s coatings requires the evaluation of various appearance characteristics of the coating film. Coloring strength determination (测试方法D4838) requires, in particular, the preparation of scratch coatings for colorimetric measurement. Other evaluations such as color designation, 透明度, 光泽度, and color difference measurements also require pull-down samples.

5.2 The artist’s tube paint has a paste consistency that makes traditional film coating methods difficult to use, especially for dry paints.

Colorimetric determination and some other types of evaluation require completely hidden substrate paint samples. Very transparent coatings require such a thick film to be completely covered, dry time is too long or the sample surface is flawed.
