ASTM D 4147-1999 Preparation of Coil Coatings with Coiled Wire and Scraper

“Standard Practice for Coil Coating Using Winding Traction Bars” (ASTM D 4147)

ASTM D4147 is the standard method for applying a thin film coating of uniform thickness to a flat plate using a coiled scratch rod.

The plate is fixed on a solid horizontal surface. Pour a sufficient amount of coating on one end of the board and place the scraping rod behind the coating. The bar is then pulled evenly along the length of the panel toward the operator to apply a uniform film. The obtained dry film thickness depends on the combination of rods used, the volume solids of the coating and the scraping speed.

This practice is useful in the laboratory for simulating roll coating.
