ASTM D 4217-2017 “Gelation Time of Thermosetting Powder Coatings”

Meaning and use
4.1 This test method can be used to select coating powders that gel at specified temperatures for the required time. This method is not useful for determination of curing time.

range
1.1 This test method determines the length of time required for a thermosetting coating powder to gel on a polished metal surface at a specified temperature (e.g. 204°C (400°F)). Gel time determination is a very simple method to characterize and quality control coating powders. However, the gel time determined by this method is not directly related to the curing time of coating powder in practical applications.

1.2 This standard is not intended to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.3 This international standard is based on the internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the WTO Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade.
