ASTM D3170-2022 Coating Resistance to Fragmentation

Meaning and Purpose
4.1 The owner considers the coating fragmentation to be unacceptable, especially on the front surface and edges of the car surface. Resistance to fragmentation damage from flying objects such as gravel is one of the important characteristics when preparing a coating or coating system to meet service requirements, as it can vary greatly as other characteristics are adjusted. Since fragmentation resistance is reduced at lower temperatures, partly due to reduced flexibility, the test may be more directly related to the conditions of use by conducting the test at low temperatures. The test method is designed to produce a controlled amount of impact through the medium on the coated panel to improve repeatability.

Scope of
1.1 The test method includes determining the resistance of the coating to fragmentation damage by stones or other flying objects.

Note 1: This test method is similar to SAE J-400.

1.2 All dimensions are nominal unless otherwise stated.

1.3 Values expressed in SI units or inch-pound units should be treated separately as standard values. The values specified in each system are not necessarily the same; Therefore, to ensure compliance with the standards, each system should be used independently of each other and the values of the two systems should not be combined.
