Step 1: Scope

1.1 This guide covers the selection and use procedures for solvent-based coatings for use on exterior, interior or both types of surfaces (see Note 1). Tables 1 and 2 list the attributes that can be checked or, in some cases, the relevant test procedures.

Note 1: The term “architectural coatings” used here combines the definition in the term D16 with the definition in the FSCT Paint/Coatings Dictionary as follows: “Organic coatings intended for field application to residential, commercial, indoor or outdoor surfaces, as compared to industrial coatings, institutional or industrial buildings.” They are protective and decorative finishes applied at ambient temperatures. Commonly referred to as trade sales coatings. ”

Note 2: Architectural coatings are designed to provide better performance than most conventional coatings as they are tougher, more resistant to stains and wear, covered by Guide D3730.

1.2 The following types of organic coatings are covered in this Guide:

(1) Type 1 internal low gloss wall finish,

(2) Type 2 Interior Gloss and Semigloss Wall and Trim Enamels,

(3) Type 3 exterior house and trim paint, and

(4) Type 4 floor enamel, exterior and/or interior.

1.2.1 Each is used for construction by brush, roll, spray or other methods to a material suitable for its type, including wood, plaster, wallboard, masonry, steel, previously painted surfaces and other building substrates.
