ASTM D5178-2021 Abrasion Resistance of Organic Coatings

Meaning and Purpose
5.1 In some cases, coating damage applied to the substrate under typical conditions of use is unacceptable. It has been found that the test method can be used to distinguish the damage degree of coating on the substrate. It is useful to provide relative ratings for a range of coated plates that exhibit significant differences in damage.

5.2 In limited laboratory studies, it is not possible to obtain meaningful damage results when testing powder coatings. Scratches, or scratches, become increasingly imperceptible over time. Therefore, powder coatings may not be suitable for this test method.

Scope of
1.1 This test method covers the determination of abrasion resistance on smooth, flat surfaces. The results are expressed in terms of tear force films when organic coatings, such as paint, varnish, and lacquer, are applied to smooth, flat panel surfaces.
