Meaning and Purpose
4.1 This practice should be adopted for paints that are sprayed on objects in the factory or on site. It is particularly important to evaluate the appearance properties of metal coatings, such as gloss and color.

4.2 Slight orange peel or spray wave may appear in the coating coated with the test method.

1. Scope
1.1 Five methods for preparing uniform thickness coating films on test plates are presented. These practices are:

Practice A – Automatic sprayer application

Program B – Application for motor dip coating machine

Practice C – Motor driven scraper membrane application

Practice D – Hand-held spray gun application

Program E – Handheld blade film application

1.2 The use of winding traction rods as described in Practice D4147 may also be a suitable method for producing films of uniform coating thickness.

1.3 Values expressed in SI units shall be regarded as standards. The values given in parentheses are for reference only.
