ISO 8504-1-2019 “Preparation of steel substrates before use in paints and related products – Surface treatment methods – Part 1: General principles”

introduction
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document and those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. In particular, attention should be paid to the different approval criteria required for different types of ISO documents. This document has been drafted in accordance with the editing rules of ISO/IEC Directive Part 2 (see iso.org/directives).

Please note that certain elements of this document may be subject to patent rights. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patents. Details of any patent rights identified during the preparation of the document will be found in the introduction and/or in the list of patent claims received by ISO (see iso.org/patents).

Voluntary, related standards and conformity assessment related ISO specific and express the meaning of terminology as well as in relevant ISO technical barriers to trade (TBT) adhere to the principle of the world trade organization (WTO) information, please refer to the iso.org/iso/foreword.html.

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and Varnishes, Subcommittee SC 12, Preparing steel substrates prior to the application of paints and related products.

The third edition cancels and replaces the technically revised second edition (ISO 8504-1:2000). The main changes from the previous edition are as follows:

– Updating normative references;

— Edit and revise.

A list of all the parts in the ISO 8504 series can be found on the ISO website.

Any feedback or questions regarding this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A complete list of these institutions can be found at iso.org/members.html.

ISO 8504-1-2019 “Preparation of steel substrates before use in paints and related products – Surface treatment methods – Part 1: General principles”

introduce
The protective coating properties of paint and related products applied to steel are significantly affected by the surface state of the steel before coating. The main factors known to affect this performance are

– The presence of rust and dirt,

– The presence of surface contaminants, including salt, dust, oil and grease, and

– Surface outline.

ISO 8501 series, ISO 8502 series and ISO 8503 series provide methods for assessing these factors, while ISO 8504 series provides guidance on preparation methods that can be used to clean steel substrates, indicating the ability of each to achieve specified levels of cleanliness.

These international standards do not contain recommendations for protective coating systems applied to steel surfaces. They do not contain recommendations for surface quality requirements for specific situations, even though surface quality has a direct impact on the choice of protective coatings and their performance. These recommendations are found in other documents such as national standards and codes of practice. These international standards are used to ensure specified quality

ISO 8504-1-2019 “Preparation of steel substrates before use in paints and related products – Surface treatment methods – Part 1: General principles”

– Compatible with and suitable for the environmental conditions to which the steel will be exposed and the protective coating system to be used, and

– Within the capacity of the specified cleaning procedure.

This document should be read in conjunction with ISO 8504-2, ISO 8504-3, which describe specific surface treatment methods.

1 Range
This document describes the general principles for selecting a method for preparing steel surfaces prior to the application of paints and related products. It also contains information about the characteristics to be considered when selecting and specifying certain surface treatment methods and preparation grades.
