ASTM D522-2021 Axial Bending Test for Organic Coating

Meaning and Purpose

4.1 The coating attached to the substrate will elongate when the substrate size is unstable, or bend during the manufacturing of the item or when the item is abused in use. These test methods can be used to assess the ability of the attached coating to resist cracking when stretched. They can be used to assess the flexibility of coatings on flexible substrates. The elongation of the coating can also be tested using test method D2370. The correlation between the elongation rates determined according to the test methods D522/D522M and D2370 is unknown.

Scope of
1.1 These test methods include the determination of the cracking resistance (flexibility) of organic coatings attached to metal plates or rubber-like material substrates.

1.2 Values expressed in SI units or ink-pound units shall be considered standards, respectively. The values specified in each system are not necessarily exactly equal; Therefore, to ensure compliance with the standards, each system should be used independently and the values of the two systems should not be combined.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.4 This international Standard has been developed in accordance with the internationally accepted standardization principles established in the decisions of the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) of the World Trade Organization on the Formulation of International standards, guidelines and recommended principles.
