ASTM D522/D522M-2021 Standard Test Method for Bending Tests on Mandrids with Organic Coatings

Meaning and Purpose
4.1 When the size of the substrate is not stable, the coating attached to the substrate will elongate, or when the product is bent during the manufacturing process or the product is abused in use. These test methods can be used to evaluate the ability of the attached coating to resist cracking when elongated. They are useful in assessing the flexibility of coatings on flexible substrates. The elongation of the coating can also be tested using test method D2370. The correlation between the elongation rates determined according to the test methods D522 / D522M and D2370 is unknown.

Scope of
1.1 These test methods include determining the cracking resistance (flexibility) of organic coatings attached to metal plates or rubber-type material substrates.

1.2 Values expressed in SI units or ink-pound units should be treated separately as standard values. The values specified in each system are not necessarily the same; Therefore, to ensure compliance with the standards, each system should be used independently of each other and the values of the two systems should not be combined.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.4 This international Standard has been developed in accordance with the internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade of the World Trade Organization.
