ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document and those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and Varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, Common Test Methods for paints and varnishes.

The second edition cancels and replaces the technically revised first edition (ISO 1518-2:2011). The main changes from the previous edition are as follows:

– Adding article 3, terms and definitions;

– Articles 7 and 10 have been aligned with ISO 1518-1.

ISO 1518-2-2019 Paints and varnishes – Determination of scratch resistance – Part 2: Variable loading method

1 Range
This document specifies a method for determining the scratch resistance of the upper layer of a single or multilayer coating system of paint, varnish or related products using a pointed needle with an increasing load.

The test has been found to be helpful in comparing the scratch resistance of different coatings. It is best suited to provide relative ratings for a range of coated panels that exhibit significant differences in scratch resistance.

Note that neither this document nor ISO 1518-1 specifies the method of bending a stylus as specified in ISO 12137. The choice between these three approaches will depend on the specific practical problem.
