ASTM F1308-2018 Standard Test Method for Quantification of Volatile Extracts in Microwave Receptors for Food Use

Meaning and use
5.1 This test method is designed to measure volatile extractable substances that may be released from the microwave receptor material during use. It may be useful to help minimize the amount of volatile extracables through base design or manufacturing processes.

5.2 This procedure can be modified by using an appropriate qualitative GC detection (e.g. a mass spectrometer) instead of a flame ionization detector to identify unidentified volatile extractable substances.

Step 1: Scope
1.1 This test method covers the full range of microwave receptors.

1.2 This test method covers the procedure for quantifying volatile compounds that have been identified and are gradually formed when a sample of microwave receptors is tested under simulated use conditions.

1.3 This test method is evaluated in conjunction with a variety of volatile compounds (see Statistical evaluation). For compounds other than those evaluated, the analyst should determine the sensitivity and reproducibility of the method by conducting appropriate labeling and recovery studies. Analysts may refer to Convention E260 for guidance.

1.4 In order to verify identity or identify unknown volatile compounds, analysts are encouraged to use techniques such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, gas chromatography/infrared spectroscopy or other techniques combined with this test method.

1.5 Sensitivity is about 0.025μg/ in. 2 is used in the compounds studied can be realized in Table 1. If quantitative analysis of other compounds is to be performed and there is uncertainty about the sensitivity of the method, the analyst can be used in combination with the method E260 to determine the sensitivity of the chromatographic method.

1.6 Values expressed in SI units shall be regarded as standard values. This standard does not include other units of measurement.

1.7 This standard is not intended to address all safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental specifications and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use. Specific security hazards warnings are given in 10.2, 11.1 and 11.6.

1.8 This international standard is based on internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
