ASTM F1884-2018 Standard Test Method for the Determination of Residual Solvents in Packaging Materials

Meaning and use

5.1 This test method is designed to measure volatile organic compounds emitted by packaging materials under high temperature conditions.

5.2 This test method may assist in the development and manufacture of packaging materials with minimal retention of packaging ink/adhesive solvents.

5.3 This procedure can be modified by using an appropriate qualitative GC detection device (e.g. a mass spectrometer) instead of a flame ionization detector to identify unidentified VOCs.

ASTM F1884-2018 Standard Test Method for the Determination of Residual Solvents in Packaging Materials

Step 1: Scope

1.1 This test method covers a method for determining the amount of residual solvent released within the packaging material in a sealed vial at a given time and temperature conditions and is a proposed alternative to test method F151.

1.2 This test method covers procedures for quantifying volatile compounds whose identities have been determined and retained in the packaging material.

1.3 The analyst shall determine the sensitivity and reproducibility of the method by conducting appropriate studies of the target solvent. Analysts may refer to Convention E260 for guidance.

1.4 For the purpose of verifying identity or identifying unknown volatile compounds, analysts are encouraged to use gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, gas chromatography/infrared spectroscopy or other appropriate techniques in conjunction with this test method.

1.5 Due to variations in substrate/solvent interactions between different sample types, the sensitivity of this test method in determining a given retention solvent concentration needs to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

1.6 This test method does not address the problem of determining the total residual solvent in the packaging material. For this, techniques such as multiple headspace extraction can be employed. You can refer to the manual that comes with the GC-Automatic sampling system for guidance to the analyst.

1.7 Values expressed in SI units shall be considered standard.

1.8 This standard is not intended to address all safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental specifications and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.9 This international standard is based on internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
