ASTM G17-07-2020 “Standard Test Method for Permeability Resistance of Pipe Coatings (Blunt Rods)”

Meaning and Use

3.1 Since the pipe coating is subject to concentrated pressure exerted by the weight of the pipe and the backfill, this test is mainly used to determine the resistance of the coating to penetration or deformation under controlled conditions.

3.1.1 If the coating is not penetrated, the deformation of the compressible coating does not indicate a potential defect in the underground burial service. Deformation is not comparable to penetration coating.

Scope

1.1 This accelerated test method is used to determine the relative resistance of steel pipe coatings to penetration or deformation of blunt rods under specified loads. This test method is applicable to the test of all kinds of non-metallic pipe coatings under various temperatures.

1.2 The value of three significant decimal places in SI units shall prevail. The values given in parentheses are for reference only.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
