ISO 1518-1-2019 Paints and varnishes – Determination of scratch resistance – Part 1: constant loading method

introduction
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document and those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. In particular, attention should be paid to the different approval criteria required for different types of ISO documents. This document has been drafted in accordance with the editing rules of ISO/IEC Directive Part 2 (see iso.org/directives).

Please note that certain elements of this document may be subject to patent rights. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patents. Details of any patent rights identified during the preparation of the document will be found in the introduction and/or in the list of patent claims received by ISO (see iso.org/patents).

Voluntary, related standards and conformity assessment related ISO specific terminology and express the meaning of and the ISO in the technical barriers to trade (TBT) adhere to the principle of the world trade organization (WTO) information, please see the iso.org/iso/foreword.html.

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and Varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, Common Test Methods for paints and varnishes.

The second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 1518-1:2011), which has been technically revised. The main changes from the previous edition are as follows:

– Adding article 3, terms and definitions;

– For hard metal tips, probes with diameters of 0,75 mm and 3,0 mm are added;

– Added a description of the test panel;

– Surface scores have been added to the assessment;

– Added requirements to check the stylus tip for damage, contamination, and smooth appearance;

Articles 7 and 10 have been aligned with ISO 1518-2.

A list of all the components in the ISO 1518 series can be found on the ISO website.

Any feedback or questions regarding this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A complete list of these institutions can be found at iso.org/members.html.

ISO 1518-1-2019 Paints and varnishes – Determination of scratch resistance – Part 1: constant loading method

1 Range
This document specifies a test method for determining the permeability resistance of single – or multi-coat systems of paints, varnishes or related products under specified conditions by striking with a scratch stylus loaded with a specified load. Penetration of the stylus is to the substrate, except in the case of multi-coating systems, in which case the stylus can penetrate to the substrate or intermediate coating.

The specified method can be executed

a) As a “pass/fail” test, by applying a single specified load to the probe pin to assess compliance with a specific specification, or

b) As an evaluation test, the minimum load for coating penetration is determined by applying an increased load to the probe needle.

Note that neither this document nor ISO 1518-2 specify the method of bending a stylus as specified in ISO 12137. The choice between these three approaches will depend on the specific practical problem.
