5.1 This test method is especially used as a quality control tool for molding or synthesis operations. Acetaldehyde is a volatile degradation product produced during PET melting processing. As a result, it is captured in the side wall of the molded product and slowly desorbed into the contents packaged therein. In some foods and beverages, AA can give off an undesirable taste, so it is important to understand its concentration in PET products used in food contact applications.

1.1 This test method covers gas chromatography for the determination of ppm residual acetaldehyde (AA) in polyethylene terephthalate (Alagang Hayop) homopolymers and copolymers used in beverage bottle production. This includes sample types for amorphous and solid particle samples and billet samples, as opposed to bottling tests (test method D4509), which require 24 hours of desorption into the top space of the bottle at 23°C before concentration. Headspace was quantified by a similar GC method.
