הַקדָמָה
ISO (הארגון הבינלאומי לתקינה) היא ברית גלובלית של גופי תקינה לאומיים (גופים חברי ISO). פיתוח תקנים בינלאומיים מתבצע בדרך כלל באמצעות ועדות טכניות של ISO. כל מוסד חבר המעוניין בנושא שעליו הוקמה ועדה טכנית זכאי להיות מיוצג באותה ועדה. ארגונים ממשלתיים ולא-ממשלתיים בינלאומיים המקיימים קשר עם ISO מעורבים גם הם בעבודה זו. ISO עובד בשיתוף פעולה הדוק עם הנציבות האלקטרוטכנית הבינלאומית (חברת החשמל) בכל נושא התקינה האלקטרונית.

The second edition cancelled and replaced the technically revised first edition (ISO 4591:1979).

This standard provides

— A method for determining the weight and thickness of a plastic film or sheet sample (see article 3);

A method for determining the average weight thickness of a plastic film or sheet roll and, if required, the yield per unit mass area (see article 4).

These methods are applicable to all plastic films and sheets and are of particular value when mechanical scanning is not accurate enough, especially for measuring the thickness of embossed sheets.
