ISO 1520-2006 “Scratch and indentation test”

A Preface
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented in the committee. Government and non-governmental international organizations that liaize with standardization organizations are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

International standards are presented according to the ISO/IEC directives, part 2, the drafting of rules.

The main task of the technical committee is to develop international standards. Draft international standards adopted by the Technical Committee will be circulated to member bodies for voting. Publication as an international standard requires approval by at least 75% of member institutions.

ISO 1520 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, General test methods for paints and varnishes.

The third edition eliminates and replaces the technically revised second edition (ISO 1520:1999). The main changes are:

– Make sure to do it in duplicate rather than in triplicate;

– Added precision data;

-The text was edited and revised, and normative references were reviewed.

ISO 1520-2006 “Scratch and indentation test”

Introduction
This international standard is one of six standards that specifies empirical test procedures for assessing the resistance of paints, varnish and related product coatings to cracking and/or shedding from substrate under different deformation conditions.

Other criteria are:

ISO 1519, paints and varnishes – bending test (cylindrical mandrel)

ISO 6272-1, paints and varnishes – rapid deformation (impact) test – part 1: drop test, large head

ISO 6272-2, paints and varnishes — Rapid deformation (impact resistance) test — Part 2: Drop hammer test, small area indenter

ISO 6860, Paints and varnishes — Bending test (tapered mandrel)

ISO 17132, paints and varnishes – T bend test

The method to be chosen depends on the characteristics that need to be measured. In principle, all these tests on the technology different from each other, the accuracy is also different.

1 Scope
This standard specifies an empirical method for assessing the resistance of paints, varnishing or related product coatings to cracking and/or shedding from metal substrates when gradually deforming through indentation under standard conditions (see 7.1).

For multi-coating systems, each coating can be tested individually or the entire system can be tested.

The method can be carried out as follows:

– as a “pass/fail” test by testing to a specified indentation depth to assess whether meet certain requirements;

— or by gradually increasing the indentation depth to determine the minimum depth at which the coating will crack and/or fall off the substrate.
