3.1 This test method can be used to determine the anti-swelling efficiency of various waterproof formulations when applied to wood. This is the initial method for assessing the ability of waterproofed wood to operate satisfactorily when exposed to a liquid water environment.

3.2 Differences in the swelling of untreated wood species when immersed in water can also be determined by this test method.

3.3 The method is a basic screening test, so that the anti-swelling efficiency of the water repellent can be preliminarily determined. This is a qualitative approach designed to provide a reproducible method to establish: (1) the anti-swelling efficiency of a waterproofing formula, and (2) the relative expansion of untreated wood species when exposed to a liquid water environment.

Step 1: Scope

1.1 This test method is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a waterproofing composition over dimensional changes in coated wood immersed in water. It can also be used to measure differential expansion of untreated wood when exposed to a liquid water environment. The tested compositions are designed to be mixed evenly and applied to an exterior wood surface by brushing, rolling, dipping or spraying.

1.2 Values expressed in SI units or inch-pound units should be considered separately as a standard. The values stated in each system may not be exactly equivalent; Therefore, each system should be used independently. Combining values from two systems can result in non-compliance.
