ASTM B487-2013 Standard Test Method for Measuring the Thickness of Metal and Oxide Coatings by Cross Section Microscopy

Meaning and use

4.1 The thickness of the coating is an important factor in the performance of the coating in use and is usually specified in the coating specification.

4.2 This method is applicable to acceptance testing.

ASTM B487-2013 Standard Test Method for Measuring the Thickness of Metal and Oxide Coatings by Cross Section Microscopy

Step 1: Scope

1.1 The test method includes the use of an optical microscope to measure the local thickness of the metal and oxide coating by examining the cross section under a microscope.

1.2 Under good conditions, the method can provide an absolute measurement accuracy of 0.8μm when using an optical microscope. This will determine the suitability of the method for measuring the thickness of the thin coating.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use. (This applies in particular to the chemicals cited in Table X2.1.)
