ISO 4624-2016 Paints and varnishes – Adhesion test by drawing method

A Preface
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented in the committee. Government and non-governmental international organizations that liaize with standardization organizations are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document as well as those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. In particular, attention should be paid to the different approval criteria required for different types of ISO documents. This document has been drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directive (see iso.org/directives).

Please note that certain contents of this document may be subject to patent rights. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of any patent rights identified during the preparation of the document will be in the introduction and/or in the list of patent claims received by ISO (see iso.org/patents).

The committee responsible for this document is ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, General test methods for paints and varnishes.

The third edition removes and replaces the second edition (ISO 4624:2002), which was technically revised with the following changes:

ISO 4624-2016 Paints and varnishes – Adhesion test by drawing method

a) Added detailed information on how to avoid substrate deformation during tensile testing;

b) The three methods of using one cart or two carts and two carts (one for the paint substrate) on the painted panel have been named methods A, B and C;

c) The supplementary test conditions previously in Annex A have been incorporated into the test report.

Introduction
This International standard is one of two standards describing a method for assessing the adhesion of a single or multi-coating system of paint, varnish or related products by measuring the minimum tensile stress required to separate or break the coating in a direction perpendicular to the substrate.

Test results are influenced not only by the mechanical properties of the system under test, but also by the nature and preparation of the substrate, method of paint application, coating drying conditions, temperature, humidity and other factors such as the type of test instrument already used.

Another international standard for assessing bonding properties is ISO 2409.

1 Scope
This standard specifies three methods (i.e. paint on the front panel of a car or two cars, one as coating substrate), through a single coating of paint, varnish, or related products or multi-layer coating system on the pull off test to determine the adhesion.

These test methods can be used to compare different coating adhesion behavior. It is most applicable to provide a relative rating for a range of coated panels that exhibit significant differences in adhesion.

The test can be performed using a variety of substrates. Different procedures are given depending on whether the substrate is deformable, such as thin metal, plastic and wood, or rigid, such as thick concrete and metal plates. To avoid substrate deformation during tensile testing, a sandwich structure is usually used. For example, for a special purpose, coating can be directly coated on the surface of test cart.
