ASTM D1200-2018 Test Method for Viscosity Determination with Ford Viscosity Cup

Meaning and Purpose
5.1 The test method can be used to determine the packaging and application viscosity of many paints and other coatings and the dilution of these materials, but is limited to Newtonian or near-Newtonian liquids.

5.2 There are other types of equipment used to measure viscosity in the laboratory that can produce more accurate results.

Scope of
1.1 The test method consists of the determination of the viscosity of Newton or near-Newton paints, varnishes, varnishes and related liquid materials using a Ford-type external discharge viscosity cup. If the material is non-Newtonian, that is, shear thinning or thixotropic, test method D2196 should be used.
