ISO 6272-1-2011 “Paints and varnishes for rapid deformation (impact resistance) test – Part 1: drop hammer test for large area indenter”

introduction
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

International standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directive.

The main task of the technical committee is to develop international standards. The draft international standard adopted by the Technical Committee will be circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an international standard requires approval by at least 75% of member institutions.

Please note that certain elements of this document may be subject to patent rights. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patents.

ISO 6272-1 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Sub-Committee SC 9, General Test Methods for paints and varnishes.

The second edition cancels and replaces the technically revised first edition (ISO 6272-1:2002). The main technological changes are as follows:

a) In the description of the catheter (see 4.1.3) and in Figure 1, the allowable clearance between the catheter and the drop hammer has changed;

b) the “Principles” clause has been added;

c) The test is no longer performed at the specified relative humidity; Instead, only the relative humidity needs to be recorded, but the test needs to be completed within a specified time after adjusting the test panel;

d) Supplementary test conditions (original Annex A) have been included in the test report.

ISO 6272-1-2011 “Paints and varnishes for rapid deformation (impact resistance) test – Part 1: drop hammer test for large area indenter”

ISO 6272 consists of the following parts, under the general heading Paints and varnishes – Rapid Deformation (impact resistance) testing:

– Part 1: Drop hammer test, large area indenter

– Part 2: Drop hammer test, small area indenter

1 Range
This part of ISO 6272 describes a method for assessing the resistance of the dry film of paints, varnishes or related products to cracking or peeling of the substrate when subjected to deformation caused by weight loss, with a spherical indenter of 20 mm diameter, dropped under standard conditions.

Note that the terms “impact” and “impact resistance” are used in the title and text of this part of ISO 6272, but an important feature of the equipment used is that it should produce rapid deformation rather than a true impact.

The described method can be applied

– As a pass/fail test, from a drop height and specified mass to test compliance with a specific specification;

– Or as a classification test, determine the minimum mass and/or droplet height at which the coating can crack or peel off from its substrate by gradually increasing the droplet height and/or mass.
