ASTM D 2697-86-2022 Determination of Non-Volatile Volume in Paint or Color Paint

Meaning and Purpose
4.1 The test method is designed to provide a measure of the dry coating volume obtained from a given volume of liquid coating. This value can be used to compare the coverage (square feet of surface covered at a specified dry film thickness per unit volume) that can be obtained by different coating products.

4.2 For various reasons, the values obtained may not be equal to those predicted by the simple additivity of the weight and volume of raw materials in the formulation. One reason is that the resin solution may occupy the same, larger, or smaller volume in the solvent as the total volume of the individual components: this shrinkage or expansion in the resin solution is governed by a number of factors, one of which is the degree and direction of diffusion between the solubility parameters of the resin and the solvent.

4.3 The spatial configuration of the pigment particles and the extent to which the space between the pigment particles is filled by the adhesive will also affect the volume of the dry coating formulation. Above the critical pigment volume concentration, the apparent volume of the dry film is significantly larger than the theoretical volume due to the increase in unfilled voids between the pigment particles. In this case, careful consideration should be given to the use of volumetric nonvolatile matter values, as the bulk increase is mainly due to air trapped in these voids.

Scope of
1.1 The test method is considered suitable for the determination of the volume of non-volatile matter in various coatings. An interlaboratory study to determine the accuracy of the test method included a water-reducible exterior latex paint and three automotive coatings, including a solvent-reducible primer, a water-reducible primer topcoat, a water-reducible enamel topcoat, and an acrylic dispersible paint topcoat. Early collaborative research included gloss enamel, flat wall paint, gloss house enamel, industrial baking enamel, interior latex paint and exterior latex paint. This method is not applicable to radiation-curable materials or tinted coatings.
