ISO 6272-2-2011 “Rapid deformation (impact resistance) test for paints and varnishes – Part 2: Drop hammer test for small area indenters”

A Preface
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented in the committee. Government and non-governmental international organizations that liaize with standardization organizations are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

International standards are drafted according to the rules given in Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directive.

The main task of the technical committee is to develop international standards. Draft international standards adopted by the Technical Committee will be circulated to member bodies for voting. Publication as an international standard requires approval by at least 75% of member institutions.

ISO 6272-2-2011 “Rapid deformation (impact resistance) test for paints and varnishes – Part 2: Drop hammer test for small area indenters”

ISO 6272-2 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, General test methods for paints and varnishes.

The second edition eliminates and replaces the technically revised first edition (ISO 6272-2:2002). The major technical changes are:

a) all non-SI units have been deleted;

B) remove the definition, because the word “effect” for the purposes of this test is not correct;

c) A drawing showing the test device has been added;

d) The test is no longer conducted at the specified relative humidity; Instead, only the relative humidity is recorded, but the test needs to be completed within the specified time after adjusting the test panel;

ISO 6272-2-2011 “Rapid deformation (impact resistance) test for paints and varnishes – Part 2: Drop hammer test for small area indenters”

e) No longer use pinhole detectors to detect holes in the coating under test;

f) Precision data has been removed because this method is slightly different from the ASTM method where precision data is applied;

G) supplementary test conditions (appendix A) has been incorporated into the test report.

ISO 6272 consists of the following parts, the total title for paints and varnishes – rapid deformation (impact) test:

— Part 1: Drop hammer test, large area indenter

— Part 2: Drop hammer test, small area indenter

ISO 6272-2-2011 “Rapid deformation (impact resistance) test for paints and varnishes – Part 2: Drop hammer test for small area indenters”

1 Scope
This part of ISO 6272 describes a method for assessing the resistance of dry films of paints, varnishes or related products to substrate cracking or peeling when subjected to deformation caused by falling weight, falling under standard conditions, acting on small area spherical indents.

Note the term “shock” and “shock resistance” used in this part of ISO 6272 title and text, but an important feature of the equipment used is that it should produce rapid deformation rather than the real impact.

Due to the poor reproducibility of this test method, the method should be limited to testing in one laboratory when the results are expressed numerically. When using ranking instead of numerical laboratory the consistency between the improved.
