ASTM D 4946-89-2017 Adhesion Resistance of Architectural Coatings

Meaning and Purpose
5.1 Dry paint is often in contact with itself, especially in the area of doors and Windows, and can sometimes stick to itself (block) depending on its hardness, pressure, temperature, humidity and length of time the surface has been in contact. This rigorous test method can be used to subjectively compare and evaluate the adhesion resistance of paints.

Scope of
1.1 This test method covers an accelerated procedure for assessing the face-to-face adhesion resistance of coatings for trade sales. This should not be confused with anti-adhesion test method D3003, which involves blocking of industrial coatings on metal substrates, nor with test method D2793, which specifically deals with wood product finishes and reports results on a satisfactory or unsatisfactory basis, rather than by the degree of blocking tendency as in this test method.

1.2 Values expressed in SI units of measurement shall be considered as standards. The values given in parentheses are for reference only.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
