5.1 The porosity of the paint film is closely related to the important practical characteristics of stain resistance, התנגדות ללבוש, durability and retention of any paint subsequently applied.

5.2 The test provides an accurate method of assessing and comparing the quality of the paint film as it relates to the porosity measured on a coating applied to a non-porous substrate. When a coating is applied to a substrate with higher absorption properties, the porosity measured using this test method may not be an accurate predictor of the coating porosity.

5.3 Unlike the porosity of the current test method D3258 paint film, which is only valid for light-colored paint, this test method is equally valid for any color paint, both dark and light. Unlike the test method D3258, the results are not affected by the covering properties of the paint film.

ASTM D6583-19 – Test Method for Determination of Porosity of Paint Film by Mineral Oil Absorption Method

1.1 This test method is applicable to any type of air-dried architectural coatings, including solvent and water-based coatings, and any color, dark and light. It cannot be used with films dissolved in mineral oil or over-softened, but practical examples of such films are rarely encountered, if at all.
