ISO 2884-2-2003 “Determination of viscosity of paints and varnishes by rotary viscometer – Part 2: Determination by turntable or ball viscometer at specified rates”

ISO 2884-2-2003 Standard name: Paint and varnish – Determination of viscosity by rotary viscometer – Part 2: Determination by turntable or ball viscometer at specified rates
A Preface
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented in the committee. Government and non-governmental international organizations that liaize with standardization organizations are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

International standards are drafted according to the rules given in Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directive.

ISO 2884-2-2003 “Determination of viscosity of paints and varnishes by rotary viscometer – Part 2: Determination by turntable or ball viscometer at specified rates”

The main task of the technical committee is to develop international standards. Draft international standards adopted by the Technical Committee will be circulated to member bodies for voting. Publication as an international standard requires approval by at least 75% of member institutions.

Please note that certain contents of this document may be subject to patent rights. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

ISO 2884-2 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, General test methods for paints and varnishes.

ISO 2884 consists of the following parts, under the general heading Paints and Varniases-Determination of viscosity using a rotary viscometer:

— Part 1: Cone viscometers operating at high shear rates

— Part 2: Disk or spherical viscometers operating at specified speeds

Warning – Persons using this part of ISO 2884 should be familiar with normal laboratory practice. This part of ISO 2884 is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. Users are responsible for establishing appropriate health and safety practices and ensuring compliance with any national regulatory conditions.

1 Scope
This part of ISO 2884 specifies general procedures for the determination of the viscosity of paints, varnities and related products with a viscosity up to 34 Pa·s. It is mainly suitable for production and thinning.

It complements

ISO 2431, Paints and varnishes – Determination of flow times using flow cups;

ISO 2884-1, paints and varnishes — Determination of viscosity using a rotary viscometer — Part 1: Cone plate viscometers operating at high shear rates.

For a more accurate method of viscosity measurement, see ISO 3219, Plastics — Liquid polymers/resins or emulsions or dispersions — Viscosity determination using a rotary viscometer with defined shear rates.

The specified equipment can be used in laboratory and factory environments to determine the viscosity of products and to monitor viscosity when diluted during manufacturing.
