ISO 9117-6-2012 Drying tests for paints and varnishes – Part 6: Unmarked testing

introduction
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

International standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directive.

The main task of the technical committee is to develop international standards. The draft international standard adopted by the Technical Committee will be circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an international standard requires approval by at least 75% of member institutions.

ISO 9117-6 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Sub-Committee SC 9, Common Test Methods for paints and varnishes.

ISO 9117-6-2012 Drying tests for paints and varnishes – Part 6: Unmarked testing

It cancels and replaces the technically revised ISO 3678:1976.

ISO 9117 consists of the following parts, under the general heading Paints and varnishes – Drying Tests:

– Part 1: Determination of drying state and drying time

– Part 2: Stress testing for stackability

– Part 3: Surface drying test using Balotini

– Part 4: Testing using a mechanical recorder

– Part 5: Modified Bando-Wolff test

– Part 6: Print-free testing

1 Range
This part of ISO 9117 specifies a method for assessing the resistance of paints, varnishes or related products to the imprinting of nylon gauze under specified forces applied over a specified period of time through simple empirical tests.

The method can be carried out

– As a “pass/fail” test, by determining whether a print-free state has been achieved after a specified drying time or, in the case of baking coatings, after baking and aging under specified conditions,

– or repeat the print-free test at appropriate intervals until the print-free time is obtained.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1 No Printing
The state of the paint or varnish coating, visible under normal corrected vision, when a specified grade of gauze does not leave an imprint on a surface at a specified force for a specified time

3.2 No printing time
The period of time that passes between the moment the coating is applied to the prepared test board and the moment the coating is assessed as print-free using the specified test procedure
