ISO 8130-1-2019 Powder coatings – Part 1: Determination of particle size distribution by screening

A Preface
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented in the committee. Government and non-governmental international organizations that liaize with standardization organizations are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document as well as those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. In particular, attention should be paid to the different approval criteria required for different types of ISO documents. This document has been drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directive (see iso.org/directives).

Please note that certain contents of this document may be subject to patent rights. ISO is not responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the introduction and/or in the ISO list of patent claims received (see iso.org/patents).

Any trade names used in this document are provided as information for the convenience of the user and do not constitute an endorsement.

Voluntary, related standards and conformity assessment related ISO specific terminology and express the meaning of and the ISO in the technical barriers to trade (TBT) adhere to the principle of the world trade organization (WTO) information, please see the iso.org/iso/foreword.html.

This document is prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, General Test methods for paints and varnishes.

The second edition cancels and replaces the technically revised first edition (ISO 8130-1:1992).

Compared with the previous edition, the main changes are as follows:

– Added “Terms and definitions” clause;

– added the “principles” clause;

– Increased selection of screening methods and screening selectivity;

– Increased manual screening and screening using vibration mechanism;

— The text has been edited and revised, and normative references have been updated.

A list of all parts in the ISO 8130 series can be found on the ISO website.

Any feedback or questions regarding this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A full list of these agencies can be found at iso.org/members.html.

1 Scope
This document specifies the method for determining the particle size distribution of paint powders by screening analysis. Particle size distributions with a maximum size of less than 100 μm were determined by laser diffraction ISO 8130-13. This method is particularly useful for determining oversized materials or the presence of contamination and can be used as a quality control procedure (” pass “/” fail “test) by examining the amount retained on individual sieves.

The following particle sizes are typical for paint powders, but particle sizes may vary depending on the application:

– Film technology: 1 μm to 63 μm;

– Electrostatic coating: 10 μm to 200 μm;

— Fluidized bed method: 100μm and above.

Note that sifters with mesh sizes smaller than 32μm are not practical and may become blind during use.
