ASTM D3450-15 Standard Test Method for Washability of Interior Architectural Coatings

Meaning and use
5.1 Interior architectural coatings are often discolored by dust and other dirty materials. The test method covers the relative ease and completeness of removing specific dirt from such surfaces by scrubbing. The greater the ease of removing dirt with minimal membrane erosion, the longer the expected service life.

5.2 The results obtained by this test method are not necessarily relevant to all types of stains.

5.3 Semi-finish paints usually only require the use of non-abrasive cleaners to remove dirt well, while flat paints may require abrasive types.

Step 1: Scope
1.1 The test method covers the determination of the relative ease with which dirt discoloration is removed from the inner coating dry film by washing with an abrasive or non-abrasive cleaner.

1.2 This test method is limited to coatings with a CIE-Y reflectance of 60% or higher measured according to test method E1347.

1.3 Values expressed in SI units shall be considered standard. The values given in parentheses are for reference only.

1.4 This standard is not intended to address all safety concerns associated with its use. Users of this standard are responsible for establishing appropriate safety and health measures prior to use and for determining the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
