Inhibitors are used to prevent flash rust during drying and before coating. The inhibitor or the reaction product of the inhibitor on the substrate becomes part of the coating system. Coating properties may be affected by inhibitors. Soluble contaminants or unreacted inhibitors beneath the coating may cause premature failure.

3.2 The user or illustrator needs to determine the specific test method and exposure conditions to be used. Some of the referenced test methods may not be applicable to all types of coatings.
