Principle and characteristics of X-ray fluorescence analysis

When the sample is bombarded with X-rays, the sample is excited to produce gamma fluorescence, which usually blows the inner electrons out of the K and L shells of an element atom. The holes created by the atoms are filled by high-energy outer electrons, and the high-energy electrons added to the lower energy orbitals emit the excess energy as X-ray fluorescence. These radiated lines contain the signatures of various elements, like fingerprints, and the intensity of the valence radiation of the individual dry atoms is proportional to the concentration of the element in the sample.
