Varnish color Determination of paint color

introduction

In modern society, color is everywhere. It not only endows objects with beauty, but also conveys information and emotions. In the coating industry, color is one of the key characteristics of the product, which not only reflects the composition and purity of the coating, but also directly affects the film formation performance and use range of the product. This article will delve into the importance of color in the coating industry and the two commonly used color determination methods: standard scale method and Roverpen colorimetric method.

The importance of color

Color plays a crucial role in the coatings industry, and the following are its key roles:

Composition and purity indicator: the depth of the color can comprehensively reflect the composition and purity of the coating product. Under normal circumstances, the lighter the color, the less impurities and impure substances in the paint, the higher the quality. Therefore, color has become one of the important bases for quality control.

Affect the appearance of the product: the color of the paint directly affects the appearance of the final product. In today’s competitive market, appearance is crucial to the appeal of consumers. The choice of color can make the product more attractive and improve the market competitiveness.

Film forming properties and uses: Different colors of coatings may have different film forming properties. For example, dark varnishes are usually not suitable for the manufacture of coatings that require high transparency, and are suitable for the manufacture of darker colored paints. Therefore, the color choice must consider the end use of the product.

Control of raw materials and semi-finished products: Color determination is not only applicable to finished coatings, but can also be used to monitor the color of raw materials and semi-finished products. This helps manufacturers identify potential problems early and take appropriate measures to ensure product quality.

Color determination method

In the coatings industry, there are two main methods of color determination: the standard scale method and the Roverpen colorimetric method.

1. Standard color scale method

Standard color scale method is a traditional color measurement method, its principle is in the fixed artificial light source transmission light, the use of paint to absorb the light and produce the color depth difference. According to the provisions of GB/T 1722-92, the operation steps of the standard color level method are as follows:

Load the sample into the test tube.

Place the test tube in a wooden camera obscura or colorimeter.

The sample is visually compared with a series of standard color level solutions (or glass color standards).

The result is expressed by the color closest to the solution of a certain color level of the iron-cobalt colorimeter, that is, the color of the sample is represented by the number, with No. 1 being the lightest and No. 18 the deepest.

Although the standard color scale method is simple to operate, it is affected by the subjective judgment of the operator, and there may be some uncertainty. In addition, for darker paints, this method may not be sensitive enough.

2. Roverpen colorimetric method

Rovipin colorimetric method uses photoelectric colorimeter to eliminate the interference of visual results due to different shades of product color and improve the accuracy of determination. The operating principle of Loverpen colorimetry is as follows:

Load the sample into the sample tank of the Roverpen colorimeter.

A red, yellow, and blue primary color filter marked with the unit value of the Roverban chromaticity scale was used to visually match the sample.

When the matching color is consistent with the color of the sample, the color of the sample is represented by the chromaticity scale unit value of the three filters.

Lovipen colorimetric method uses 72 red, yellow and blue primary color filters to represent the color of the sample quantitatively with thousands of combination Lovipen chroma values, which greatly improves the precision and level of color representation. This method solves the problem that the color of sample and the color of the standard color scale method is difficult to determine because of the different hue, and reduces the interference of human subjective factors.

conclusion

Color determination is a crucial task in the coating industry, which not only determines the appearance and quality of the product, but also reflects the composition and purity of the coating. Standard scale method and Roverpen colorimetric method are two commonly used color determination methods, each with a series of advantages and limitations. With accurate color determination, paint manufacturers can ensure that their products meet quality standards and market demands, while also effectively monitoring the quality of raw materials and semi-finished products. Therefore, in all stages of coating production, color determination has irreplaceable importance and is essential to ensure product quality and market competitiveness.
