ASTM D 868-2021 “Evaluation of the Degree of Penetration of Road Sign Paint”

Meaning and Purpose
4.1 Solvents in traffic paints may cause road surface components to penetrate into traffic markings, thus making traffic markings less effective as lane or direction indicators. This procedure describes how to prepare a panel for the coating under test and a reference panel coated with a specific solvent based traffic coating to be used as a control for the evaluation.

4.2 This practice is particularly useful for evaluating solvent-based traffic paints, but can also be used for other types of traffic signs, including waterpass paints.

4.3 describes two basic procedures for measuring the amount of bleeding. The procedure to be used shall be agreed upon by the buyer and the seller.
