ASTM D4798-2021 Standard Test Method for Accelerated Weathering Test Conditions and Procedures for Bituminous Materials (Xenon Arc Method)

Meaning and use
4.1 Tests conducted in accordance with this practice are used to compare the weathering properties of asphalt materials with control materials with known outdoor durability. It is not possible to establish a single relationship applicable to all materials between the timing of accelerated tests conducted under this protocol and the timing of natural weathering because (1) there are geoclimatic variations, local weather variations and local pollutant variations, and (2) the relationship between accelerated weathering and natural weathering depends on differences in acceleration factors between materials and different formulations of the same material. Guidance G141 provides guidance on the variability of outdoor and accelerated aging tests and the use of controlled materials.

Note 1: Outdoor aging is recommended to verify the performance grades of accelerated laboratory tests.

Note 2: This practice can be used for materials other than asphalt, but its significance and use have not been evaluated.

Radius
1.1 This code covers test conditions and procedures for xenon arc exposure to asphalt roofing and waterproof materials G151 and G155. (See the term G113.

1.2 Values expressed in SI units or inch-pound units shall be treated as standard values separately. The values specified in each system may not be fully equivalent; Therefore, each system should be used independently of each other. Combining values from two systems may result in non-compliance.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.4 This international standard is based on internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the WTO Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade.
