ISO 2813-2014 Paints and varnishes – Determination of mirror gloss at 20°, 60° and 85° non-metallic paint films

introduction
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document and those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. In particular, attention should be paid to the different approval criteria required for different types of ISO documents. This document has been drafted in accordance with the editing rules of ISO/IEC Directive Part 2 (see iso.org/directives).

ISO 2813-2014 Paints and varnishes – Determination of mirror gloss at 20°, 60° and 85° non-metallic paint films

The committee responsible for this document is ISO/TC 35, Paints and Varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9, Common Test Methods for Paints and varnishes.

The fourth edition cancelled and replaced the technically revised third edition (ISO 2813:1994). It also incorporates ISO 2813:1994 / Cor.1:1997 Technical Corrigendum.

The main technological changes are:

a) The title has been changed;

b) The scope has been extended to include gloss measurement of metal coatings;

c) The term “specular gloss” has been replaced with “gloss”;

d) Gloss value is expressed in gloss unit (GU);

e) A new annex on possible sources of error has been added (Annex A);

f) A new annex on calibration standards has been added (Annex B);

g) A new annex has been added to the glossiness calculation of the main reference standards (Annex C);

h) A new annex on precision details has been added (Annex D);

i) Precision data is the result of large-scale inter-laboratory testing.

ISO 2813-2014 Paints and varnishes – Determination of mirror gloss at 20°, 60° and 85° non-metallic paint films

1 Range
This international standard specifies methods for determining the gloss of coatings using three geometries of 20°, 60° or 85°. This method is suitable for the glossiness measurement of non-textured coatings on flat and opaque substrates.

Note that comparative gloss measurements can be made on samples different from the above. However, there is no guarantee that the obtained gloss value corresponds to the visual gloss perception (see Annex A).ISO 2813-2014 Paints and varnishes – Determination of mirror gloss at 20°, 60° and 85° non-metallic paint films

All or part of the following documents are referred to normatively in this document and are required for their application. For dated references, only the cited version applies. For undated references, a new version of the reference (including any revisions) applies.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 4618 and the following articles apply.

3.1 Luster

The optical properties of a surface are characterized by the ability of its mirror to reflect light

Note 1: Examples of gloss include high gloss, gloss, silk gloss, semi-gloss, satin, matte, and dead matte.

[Source: ISO 4618:2014, 2.132]

3.2 Geometry

Identify gloss measurement methods using a specified Angle and a specified aperture

3.3 Gloss value

For the specified reflection Angle and the specified aperture Angle of the light source and the acceptor, the luminous flux reflected from the specimen is multiplied by the ratio of the luminous flux of 1,567 on a glass surface with a refractive index of 1,567 in the mirror direction to the luminous flux of 587,6 nm in the mirror direction

Note 1: Gloss value is expressed in gloss unit (GU). Gloss values are not allowed to be interpreted and represented as “% reflections”.

Note 2: The gloss value measured on the coating is expressed as rounded to the nearest whole number (no decimal).

Note 3: To define gloss, polished black glass with a refractive index of 587,6 at a wavelength of 1,567 nm is assigned values for the 100°, 60°, and 85° geometers.

Note 4: Glass surfaces with a reflectance index of 1,567 at a wavelength of 546,1 nm (the central wavelength of the spectral luminescence efficiency function) can be used.

Note 5: Gloss value is affected by surface characteristics, such as roughness, texture, structure of the sample.
