ASTM D6677-2018 Evaluation of Adhesion by Blade Method

Meaning and Purpose
1 For a paint to function satisfactorily, it needs to adhere to the substrate on which it is applied. It has been found that this test method can be used as a simple method to evaluate the adhesion of coatings. Although this method is a qualitative (subjective) test, it has been used in industry for many years and can provide valuable information.

2 Other adhesion testing methods may be useful to obtain quantitative results. See test methods D2197, D3359, D4541 and D7234.

3 The performance evaluation scale (see Table 1) is based on the difficulty of removing the coating from the substrate and the size of the coating fragments removed.

4 There is no known correlation between this test method and other adhesion test methods (stripping, tape, etc.).

5 Coatings with high cohesive strength appear to be less cohesive than brittle coatings and thus are prone to rupture upon probing.

6 This method is not suitable for coating that is too thick, that is, coating that cannot be cut to the substrate in one stroke with a utility knife.

ASTM D6677-2018 Evaluation of Adhesion by Blade Method

Scope of
1 The test method covers the procedure of evaluating the adhesion of the coating to the substrate using a knife.

2 This test method is used to determine whether the adhesion of the coating to the substrate or another coating (in a multi-layer coating system) is generally sufficient.

Note 1: The term “substrate” refers to the basic surface (which may be steel, concrete, etc., or other coatings) to which the coating adheres.

3 This method can be used in the laboratory and field.

4 Values expressed in SI units should be considered standard. The values given in parentheses are for reference only.
