ISO 12944.3-2017 “Paint and varnish protection paint systems for corrosion protection of steel structures – Part 3: Design content”

A Preface
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global alliance of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The development of international standards is usually carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member institution interested in a subject on which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented in the committee. Government and non-governmental international organizations that liaize with standardization organizations are also involved in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document as well as those used for further maintenance are described in Part 1 of the ISO/IEC Directive. In particular, attention should be paid to the different approval criteria required for different types of ISO documents. This document has been drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directive (see iso.org/directives).

ISO 12944.3-2017 “Paint and varnish protection paint systems for corrosion protection of steel structures – Part 3: Design content”

This document has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnished, Subcommittee SC 14, Protective coating Systems for Steel Structures.

The second edition eliminates and replaces the technically revised first edition (ISO 12944-3:1998).

Compared with the previous edition, the main changes are as follows:

– Deleted terms and definitions not used in the main part of the standard;

— Normative references have been updated;

— 5.1 added “general”;

— 5.3 added the requirements for gap sealing materials;

– Increased requirements for surface treatment in C4 and higher and Im1 to Im4 with high and very high durability;

— The headings of Table A.1 have been corrected;

— A key is added in Figure B.1;

– Figure D.1c) has been deleted;

– Added the radius requirement in Figures D.5 and D.7;

– Added bibliography;

— The text has been edited and revised.

Introduction
Unprotected steel in the atmosphere, water, and soil is subject to corrosion, which leads to damage. Therefore, to avoid corrosion damage, steel structures are usually protected to withstand the corrosion stresses that will be borne during the required service life of the structure.

There are different ways to protect steel structures from corrosion. ISO 12944 (all parts) addresses the protection of coating systems and covers, and in the individual parts, all functions are important to achieve adequate corrosion protection. Other measures or other measures may be taken, but special agreements between the parties concerned are required.

ISO 12944.3-2017 “Paint and varnish protection paint systems for corrosion protection of steel structures – Part 3: Design content”

To ensure effective corrosion protection of steel structures, owners of such structures, planners, consultants, companies carrying out corrosion protection work, protective coating inspectors and manufacturers of coating materials need to have new information about corrosion protection of coating systems. It goes without saying that such information should be as complete, clear and easy to understand as possible to avoid difficulties and misunderstandings by the parties involved in the actual implementation of conservation work.

ISO 12944 (all parts) is intended to provide this information in the form of a series of instructions. It is written for those with some technical knowledge. It is also assumed that users of ISO 12944 (all parts) are familiar with other relevant international standards, especially those dealing with surface treatment.

Although ISO 12944 (all parts) does not address financial and contractual issues, please note the fact that non-compliance with the requirements and recommendations given in ISO 12944 (all parts) can lead to serious financial consequences due to the huge impact of inadequate corrosion protection.

ISO 12944-1 defines the overall scope of ISO 12944. It provides some basic terms and definitions and Outlines other parts of ISO 12944. In addition, it includes general statements on health, safety and environmental protection, as well as guidelines for the use of ISO 12944 (all parts) in specific projects.

This document provides guidance on how to minimize the risk of corrosion with appropriate design measures to apply protective coating systems.

ISO 12944.3-2017 “Paint and varnish protection paint systems for corrosion protection of steel structures – Part 3: Design content”

1 Scope
This document deals with basic standards for the design of steel structures coated by protective coating systems to avoid premature corrosion and degradation of the coating or structure. It gives examples of appropriate and inappropriate design, pointing out how to avoid problems with application, inspection and maintenance of paint systems. Design measures to facilitate the handling and transportation of steel structures are also considered.
