The method provides a non-destructive method for the determination of sulfur content in cellulosic materials. Sulfur can be in the form of sulfate, which can cause thermal instability. Sulfur can also be present as a salt that can cause fog in solution.

1.1 The test method includes the determination of the sulphur content of cellulosic materials by X-ray fluorescence.

1.2 Using appropriate standards, the procedure ranges from about 10 ppm to 20% zolfo.

When applied to cellulose esters, it measures the combination of sulfur and sulfur in the accompanying inorganic salts.
