4.1 Leveling can affect the cover and appearance of applied architectural coatings, and the presence of brush marks and surface irregularities is more pronounced than flat finishes when compared to gloss and semi-gloss finishes. Flat instrumental evaluations by this test method have been shown to correlate with those applied by brushing.

1.1 This test method 2 includes laboratory determination of the relative flatness of architectural coatings that can be diluted with white and light toned water and solvents by comparing ridges produced in pull-down films with a range of plastic leveling standards.

1.2 This test method uses shadows produced by oblique lighting, which are not easy to evaluate for untinted, textured and dark coatings. Such coatings can be assessed by comparing them with plastic standards at various angles of reflection. For this reason, ordinary indoor lighting is satisfactory.

1.3 As other factors may affect the tendency of liquid coatings to sag, this test method is not intended to measure sagging.
